‘Chicken Girl’: The tragic story of a girl who grew up in a chicken coop

In 1980, Portugal was shocked by the story of Maria Isabel Quaresma Dos Santos, a 9-year-old girl who had spent her entire childhood in a chicken coop, deprived of any human interaction and affection. Because of the effects growing up with chickens had on her behaviour, Isabel became known as “Chicken Girl”. According to an article published by the Diário de Notícias newspapers in 1980, Maria Isabel Quaresma Dos Santos was born on July 6, 1970, on a farm in Tábua, in Portugal’s district of Coimbra. When she was only one year old, her mother, who doctors would later diagnose with severe mental problems, locked her away in the chicken coop, because she didn’t consider her as part of the family. The wife of Zimbabwe’s 92-year-old President, Robert Mugabe, has said that he is so popular that if he died, he could run as a corpse in next year’s election and still win votes. Grace Mugabe, 51, was addressing a rally of the governing Zanu-PF party. Mr Mugabe has governed Zimbabwe since the end of white-majority rule in 1980 following a bitterly fought war. Dec polls: NPP calls on Mahama to concede defeat

The Campaign Manager of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Peter Mac Manu has called on the President John Dramani Mahama to concede defeat. According to him, the pink sheets in their possession indicate that their candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has won the December 7 polls. Addressing a press conference in Accra, Mr Manu explained that Nana Addo is leading by 694, 724.43.381 votes in their parallel collation whilst President Mahama has 676, 998.54.91 votes. Earlier, the campaign team of President Mahama in a press statement calmed their supporters saying the President was ‘in a comfortable lead’. The team further advised their supporters to ignore media tabulations going in favour of Nana Addo.
