Member of Parliament for the Yunyoo constituency in Northern Region, Joseph Bipoba Naabu has announced an outright ban on sale of alcoholic beverages on Election Day.
According to him all drinking bars, stores and spots would be shut down on polling hours from 6am to 6pm and police will be there to ensure enforcement.
The ban he explained was to ensure voters do not liquored up and spark aggressions at polling stations and also to minimize rate of rejected ballots or spoilt votes.
He added the ban was particularly necessary following the history of some of the constituents causing violence at polling stations under the influence of excessive alcohol intake.
“That thing has been established, during Election Day in Yunyoo Constituency local drinks called apketeshie and beer and any other alcoholic drinks are not going to be allowed. We preach and talk to the alcohol sellers and they are also very careful. Me for instance if I take one bottle, I’m not correct; because of that when I wake up in the morning I don’t drink, so we won’t allow drinks to sold around”
The sale of alcoholic beverages in the constituency is a major business aside farming and there are records of abuses and scuffles triggered by people found drunk.
Police in the area says culprits who flouts the ban will be arrested to face the law.
