The Akyem Oda Police in the Eastern Region have arrested two out of three suspected armed robbers who allegedly murdered a 42-year-old taxi driver, Eric Kwaku Nartey also known as Obontia in cold blood at Oda last Wednesday.
The suspects are Sulemana Dauda, 20, a Sprinter bus driver in Accra and Joseph Arthur King 20, an auto mechanic at Akyem Abenase. Both suspects hail from Akyem Adjobue in the Akyemansa District.
The police have also mounted an intensive search for the ring leader, 22-year-old Emmanuel Kwaku Agyei, who is on the run.
Briefing journalists at Oda Thursday, the Oda Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ebenezer Ampofo, said around 8:30pm last Wednesday, he received a distress telephone call that a male adult had been killed in a house opposite Tilapia Spot at Oda Quarters.
He said he immediately mobilized his men and rushed to the scene where they saw the body in a pool of blood near his KIA Picanto taxi cab with registration number, GW 9380-16 in a house with number CB/50/2 at Charles Oppong road at Oda.
Chief Supritendent Ampofo said Madam Helena Animwaa, daughter of the caretaker of the house who was out of town, told the police that he went to watch Adom TV’s Kunkum Bhagya in another house and returned home to meet his biological brother, Agyei, entering the house and questioned him why he was at the place at that odd hour since he seldom came to the house.
He said when Agyei failed to respond to her question, she followed up and saw Nartey lying in a pool of blood near his taxi.
According to Chief Supt. Ampofo, he after sometime scaled the wall of the house and escaped compelling Helena to raise alarm which attracted many people to the scene.
He said a thorough examination of the body of the deceased by the police revealed that the suspects used clubs to hit his head several times, killing him instantly.
The Divisional commander stated that a search in the area discovered a single-barreled gun concealed in a sack.
He said a mob who besieged the area did not only set the beautiful building ablaze, but they also damaged everything in the house including clothing, water closet, cooking utensils and electric meters.
Chief Supt. Ampofo said the mob prevented personnel of the Ghana Fire Service from accessing the building while it was on fire.
He said the taxi drivers even smashed the windscreen and side mirror of the fire tender.
This caused the police to call for military reinforcement from the Jungle Welfare School at Achiase to control the situation before the firemen could put off the fire.
Meanwhile, the body of Nartey has been deposited at the Oda government hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.
