Two female head porters, better known as Kayayei collapsed during a mad rush for ‘jollof’ rice supplied by Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur.
The two were part of over 50 head porters invited to a function organized by the Gender Minister in the Asokore Mampong District of the Ashanti Region.
The event was meant to register the Kayayei onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and also help those on the scheme to renew their cards.
Leader of the Kayayei Association, Adiza Dagomba said two of the porters, with children strapped at their backs, collapsed on the stage due to hunger.
She explained that the head porters got to the venue early in the morning and hence may not have eaten. The programme, she added, started late.
Madam Dagomba accused the organizers of failing to fulfill their promise of registering all the head porters onto the health insurance scheme.
She said those who collapsed have been taken to hospital.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Nurudeen Hamidan described the incident as unfortunate.
He denied the two girls collapsed in the process of scrambling for food.
