Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John has said that President John Mahama ‘lied’ by claiming that he has never taken bribes in his life.
President Mahama during an interview on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC’s) Focus on Africa programme claimed that he has never received a bribe in his life.
“Any human being in the world would have encountered corruption one way or the other, either being offered a bribe or a bribe being demanded from you. What you need to do is to put yourself in a position to (resist it)…
When the interviewer, Peter Okwoche, asked him directly if he has taken bribe, Mr. Mahama responded “No, I haven’t taken bribe”.
This has sparked debate in the country as to whether the President told the truth or played politics with the question.
But the former NPP scribe speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Friday said the President lied to the international community and the nation.
According to him, the President has through his actions and inactions been a direct beneficiary of various scandals that has occurred under his administration and hence cannot distance himself from them.
“John Mahama is not an angel and he knows that he has several scars on him as a politician…he is a constant receiver of bribes…,” he said.
Asked if he has evidence of the President receiving bribes, Sir John said the President has failed to deal with the many corruption scandals that have occurred under his administration because he is always an indirect beneficiary of the scandals.
“According to Martin Amidu, President Mills set a committee to investigate Mahama over the purchase of the Embraer jet…if there was nothing fishy about the deal which Mahama led, why would the President order that he be investigated…?,” Sir John quizzed.
He further claimed that the committee was immediately dissolved by President Mahama upon the death of President Mills.
“Almost every project executed under the Mahama administration is done on sole sourcing basis and at the neglect of the Procurement Law…STX Korea deal stinks and Mahama was the one championing that…,” he said.
To Sir John, John Mahama is rather rewarding instead of punishing persons who engage in shoddy deals under his administration because he lacks the moral right to do so.
“…Have you ever seen a thief arresting another thief before, it would never happen and that is why John Mahama has not got the balls to prosecute even one corrupt person under his administration,” Sir John added.
