The Dansoman Police have arrested three persons for vandalising posters of an aspirant who failed to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary held in the Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Abraham Donkor, 22, Joseph Mweago, 23 and Nana Nhyira Boateng, 25, were alleged to have removed posters of Mr Theophilus Nii Ayerkwei Tettey, the also-ran.
It was reported that around 2:50a.m. last Friday, the culprits were spotted removing Tetteh’s placards which were hanging on street lights along the Dansoman Roundabout — Exhibition Roundabout street.
Quickly, the victim and his friends rushed and pounced on the culprits at the scene and handed them over to a police patrol team.
They were alleged to be supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) of the constituency, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
Dansoman Police
Upon hearing the incident, the Daily Graphic made a follow-up to the District Police Commander (DPS), and he directed the newspaper to the Divisional Commander (DC) who was not around as of 11:45 a.m.The secretary to the divisional commander refused to release the DC’s contact number for the paper to call him.
Meanwhile, sympathisers of Mr Tettey had thronged the police station, chanting y’eni abre y’eni abre kɔɔ to express their anger, but did not heckle aanybody.
“We are here to empathise with our main man, the choice for Ablekuma West,’’ one of them said.
Allegations
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Mr Tettey alleged the incident was orchestrated by Mrs Owusu-Ekuful because the culprits claimed to be acting on her behalf and that of some elders.
According to him, loyalties of Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, including his organiser,’Raster,’Kofi Fori, and Alhaji Abu were there to bail the culprits.
The note
The culprits had a note captioned: ‘Note of Authorisation,’ which was alleged to have been released by one Nana Nhyirah Boateng on behalf of the MP.
“The bearers of this note are authorised by the MP, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, to undertake a cleaning exercise on the poles of the Dansoman High Street.
“This exercise is to beautify the street. Please anybody with any reservation should call Hon Ursula for redress,” the statement explained.
Mr Tettey, however, has disclosed his intention to contest the Ablekuma seat as an independent candidate.
“In November 2016, the people of Ablekuma West are going to take a decision, whether they like the party’s candidate or their own boy who has served them diligently,’’ he said.
Confirmation
Responding to the allegation, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful confirmed the allegation and explained that “the intention of the posters were for him (Theo) to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP), primaries which completed in April, so the posters had no business to be there.”
Besides, “the culprits are being unlawfully detained by the police,” therefore, she would go to the station to effect their release.
Background
Earlier this year, Mr Tettey had intended to contest the NPP primaries, but he, however, failed to contest in April.
The April 19 contest was between Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Mr Robert Kwesi Hayfron Nicol where the former, who is also the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), won.
She obtained 554 votes to beat her closest contender, Mr Nicol, who amassed 317 votes, to become the NPP’s candidate for the November 7 polls.
There were five rejected ballots. Eight hundred and seventy-six delegates voted in the primaries in which 1,168 were expected to cast their ballots.
